COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena is scheduled to chair a meeting of the Constitutional Council today to arrive at a decision on the appointment of three civil representatives to the council.
The Office of the Speaker said after applications were called from qualified individuals, 112 applications have been submitted thus far.
The Constitutional Council was reconstituted following the enactment of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
The Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to independent commissions such as Police Commission, Bribery Commission and Election Commission.
The Speaker holds the chairmanship of the Council while the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are ex-officio members of the 10-member Constitutional Council.
The Council comprises of seven Members of Parliament and three civil representatives.
Accordingly, three representatives will be appointed for the Constitutional Council following the evaluation of the relevant applications and other qualified individuals for the position, who have not submitted applications.
The names of the selected individuals will be tabled in the Parliament for approval. Following the ratification, President Ranil Wickremesinghe will appoint them to the Constitutional Council.
