COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Constitutional Council is scheduled to convene today.

The meeting will be held under the patronage of Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

This is the first meeting of the council following the appointment of three civil society members to the 10-member body.

On Friday, President Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed three representatives for the Constitutional Council for a period of three years, after Parliament approved the names.

Accordingly, Dr.Prathap Ramanujam, Dr. Dilkushi Anula Wijesundere and Dr. Dinesha Samararatne will serve as Constitutional Council members.

The Constitutional Council was reconstituted following the enactment of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

The Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to independent commissions such as Police Commission, Bribery Commission and Election Commission.

The Speaker holds the chairmanship of the Council while the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are ex-officio members of the 10-member Constitutional Council.

The Council comprises of seven Members of Parliament and three civil representatives.
