The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has opposed the decision by the government to transfer powers of appointing members to the Constitutional Council to Parliament as proposed through the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the power to make such appointments was previously vested with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
He charged that as the government has majority power in Parliament, all members of the Constitutional Council can be appointed by the government.
The 10-member Constitutional Council will comprise seven Members of Parliament and three outsiders.
MP Bandara said the democratic features of the 19th Amendment have been curtailed through the proposed 22nd Amendment.
