A group of 41 independent Parliamentarians have proposed amendments to the Constitution that do not require a referendum.
Steps were taken to hand over the proposed draft of the 21st Amendment to the Speaker of House yesterday as a Private MPs Bill by Parliamentarian Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
MPs Rajapakshe and Nimal Siripala de Silva addressing a media briefing yesterday said most of the proposed amendments will see duties of the Executive Presidency handed over collectively to the Cabinet of Ministers.
Minister Rajapakshe added the duties will not be handed over to the Prime Minister as the Premier’s post is not an Executive role.
He added a number of commissions that were abolished under the 20th Amendment will be reinstated through the proposed amendments.
The MP stated through the proposed amendments the ability for an individual bearing dual citizenship to hold Ministerial and Parliamentary post will be revoked.
MP Nimal Siripala de Silva meanwhile said the proposals of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya require a referendum that cannot be conducted due to the prevalent crisis.
He said steps are underway to garner the support of 113 MP’s and overthrow the government adding the leadership of a possible interim government will be awarded to the individual with the support of the majority.
