A decision has been reached to administer a third vaccine dose against the coronavirus to all employees of the health sector.
The Government Medical Officers Association said a discussion in this regard was held last evening with the Director General of Health Services.
The GMOA said health workers are at great risk of contracting the coronavirus with the rise in the number of patients.
Member of the GMOA Executive Committee Dr. Prasad Colambage speaking at a media briefing said the third vaccine dose will be administered five months after the second dose was administered.
Dr. Colambage said the third dose must be administered in order to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on health workers especially, adding that the World Health Organisation and other international organisations are also directing attention to a third jab.
He noted that the mental wellbeing of health workers must also be considered at this point.
