The Communist Party of Sri Lanka has strongly opposed attempts to use the Prevention of Terrorism Act to suppress the peaceful anti-government agitation.
The Communist Party issuing a statement called for all individuals who have been arrested since the 9th of May to be dealt with under the general law.
The Communist Party said they requested authorities to appoint a ‘Truth Commission’ with appropriate powers to identify persons responsible for all the violent acts that took place since the 9th of May and to recommend appropriate punishment.
The party charged that the request to appoint a Presidential Commission was ignored and instead law enforcement authorities are engaged in a farcical attempt to identify persons who entered state offices and committed acts of violence including those who used the swimming pool and consumed food items at the President’s House.
The party claimed that while tens of thousands of people participated in protests, efforts are being made to arrest selected individuals.
