The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the proposal to register the cinema industry as an industry.

The joint proposal was submitted by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs and Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansa, in order to promote the local cinema industry and obtain international recognition.

The extent and development of the country’s cinema industry has been limited to a small local market as a result of non-declaration of the local cinema industry as an industry.

It has been recognized that a number of benefits can be achieved such as the generation of a number of livelihoods, occurrence of a social and cultural as well as an economic modification as well as assisting in tourism and education sectors, through improvement and promotion of the industry while it would assist the economy with considerable amounts.
