Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has revealed that the Criminal Investigation Department has commenced an investigation into threats received by two members of the Election Commission.
Speaking in Parliament today (19), the Premier said the two officials have been granted Police protection adding that the Election Commission is entitled to necessary protection if required.
Prime Minister Gunawardena said there are certain issues that arise during the conduct of the election adding that all parties must be protected.
The Prime Minister also stated that the Election Commission has compiled and submitted the Regulation of Election Expenditure Bill, which is being debated today, and it is the responsibility of Parliament to pass the bill.
The Premier also said there has been a public demand for the bill for some time including requests from those involved in the election campaign, various organisations and political parties.
The Prime Minister said Parliament appointed a Select Committee to amend electoral laws and the Election Commission also requested that clear rules and regulations be introduced to control election spending.
The Premier also claimed that the Bill was tabled before the Cabinet of Ministers for discussion and the Minister of Justice submitted the bill in Parliament without delay to be passed.
