(NewsRadio); China says it will play a positive role in easing Sri Lanka’s debt burden.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Wenbin reaffirmed their commitment towards Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring process as several others nations have come forward to create a common platform to arrive at a debt sustainability programme.
Speaking at a press conference, Wenbin assured that they will continue to support Chinese financial institutions in actively working out the debt treatment with Sri Lanka.
In response to a question raised pertaining to a ‘new platform’ set to be announced by Japan, India and France for creditors to coordinate restructuring of Sri Lanka’s foreign debt, Spokesman Wenbin said, “We will work with relevant countries and international financial institutions to jointly play a positive role in helping Sri Lanka navigate the situation, ease its debt burden and achieve sustainable development. At the same time, we call on commercial and multilateral creditors to take part in Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring based on fair burden-sharing”.
The development comes on the backdrop of Minister of Finance of Japan Shunichi Suzuki initiating a new platform for creditors to coordinate restructuring of Sri Lanka’s debt along with India and France.
During the announcement, Minister Suzuki said that it would be ‘very nice’ if China were to join the effort to solve Sri Lanka’s debt crisis.
