COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena says the second reading of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Bill will not be debated as planned this week.
Speaking in Parliament today, Prime Minister Gunawardena said Committees and Members of Parliament will be given time to further discuss the bill before being presented for the second reading debate.
Last week, the Committee on Parliamentary Business decided to debate the Bill on Thursday.
According to the decision taken by the Business Committee, the second reading of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Bill was scheduled to take place between 9.30am and 6pm on Thursday.
However, considering requests from several corners, the debate will take place on a later today.
On the 4th of April, Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena presented the determination of the Supreme Court on the proposed Central Bank Bill.
The Speaker informed the house that none of the clauses in the bill are inconsistent with the constitution and therefore can be passed with a simple majority in Parliament, subject to amendments detailed in its determination.
Speaking in Parliament today, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena noted that amendments proposed by the Supreme Court and several other matters will be further deliberated with the Advisory Committee of the Finance Ministry before presenting the Bill for second reading.
