Trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board engaged in a round of discussions today (2) pertaining to the measures that will be taken in the event the government reaches a decision to increase electricity tariffs.

Convenor of the Ceylon Electricity Board Joint Trade Union Alliance Ranjan Jayalal said if a decision is reached at tonight’s Cabinet meeting to increase tariffs, stern union action will be launched indefinitely from tomorrow.

He noted that if such a decision is reached, unions will work towards forcing the government to reverse the decision.

Jayalal said the public already battered by the cost of living, will be unable to bear the increase in electricity tariffs.

He charged that through this arbitrary measure the government is working towards continuing the racket of obtaining electricity from private power plants.

Meanwhile, efforts to gather 6.9 million signatures on a petition against the proposed increase in electricity tariffs is underway for the second day today.
