COLOMBO (NewsRadio); A special meeting of the Constituent Council is scheduled to be held today.
The meeting will be chaired by Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and will be held via zoom.
The special meeting was called to discuss the appointment of three civil representatives to the Constitutional Council.
Although, the council met on Thursday to finalise the appointment, members failed to agree on the appointments.
The Office of the Speaker said 112 persons have applied to become one of the three civil representatives of the Constitutional Council.
The Constitutional Council was reconstituted following the enactment of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.
The Constitutional Council is the responsible body to appoint members to the independent commissions such as Police Commission, Bribery Commission and Election Commission.
The Speaker holds the chairmanship of the Council while the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are ex-officio members of the 10-member Constitutional Council.
The Council comprises of seven Members of Parliament and three civil representatives.
Accordingly, three representatives will be appointed for the Constitutional Council following a study of the relevant applications and other qualified individuals for the position, who have not submitted applications.
The names of the selected persons will be tabled in the Parliament for approval.
Following the ratification, President Ranil Wickremesinghe will appoint them to the Constitutional Council.
