Spokesman of the Archdiocese of Colombo Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini says the Catholic church, including the Cardinal, will boycott the 75th Independence Day celebrations.
Father Gamini said the celebrations are being held by spending a large sum of money amidst a grave economic crisis.
Rev. Father Cyril Gamini speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today (1) said, independence is being marked in a country that is unable to ensure a 24-hour power supply, is embroiled in bankruptcy as foreign debt cannot be repaid, where more than 30% of the public are in hunger and children are suffering from malnutrition, a country that has witnessed an increase in unemployment, a country where businesses are collapsing, a country where the rule of law has collapsed and human rights are being violated.
Rev. Father Gamini questioned what freedom is being marked in such grandeur by spending over Rs.200 million.
He noted that such expenditure on a state function is a great crime and wastage.
