The case filed in relation to the recent death of a 16-year-old who was employed as a domestic worker at the residence of Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen will be taken up at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court No 2 today.

The wife of MP Bathiudeen and two others who were arrested and detained for questioning over the incident will also be produced before court today.

Meanwhile, the brother of MP Bathiudeen’s wife who was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting another domestic worker at the same residence will also be produced before court today.

The Police headquarters said investigations in relation to the death of the 16-year-old girl are being carried out independently and efficiently.

Issuing a statement, the Police headquarters said it is working to bring all perpetrators to book irrespective of their ranks and positions and void of political influence.

Based on the advice of the Inspector General of Police several police teams are investigating the death.

Investigations are being carried out by the Police Children and Women Bureau, the Borella Police and the Colombo South Crime Division.

Meanwhile, a team led by a Deputy Solicitor General has been appointed based on the advice of the Attorney General to provide assistance and guidance to the officers probing the incident and to represent the complainants in court.

The Police headquarters said although officers attempted on multiple occasions to record statements from the girl while she was receiving treatment at the Colombo National hospital with burn injuries, due to her condition they were unable to question her.

Meanwhile, scene of crime officers and forensic fingerprint examiners have inspected the room where the girl was residing at MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s house while officers of the Government Analyst Department have carried out inspections regarding the fire and examined incidental evidence.

Police said officers have uncovered burnt objects from the room in which the 16-year-old girl was residing and they have also been directed to the Government Analyst Department.

The post-mortem report of the 16-year-old girl who died of burn injuries while employed as a domestic worker in the house of Parliamentarian Bathiudeen was submitted to court.

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said according to the report, the girl has been sexually abused for some time.

The 16-year-old girl, was hospitalized with burn injuries on the 3rd of July while working at MP Bathiudeen’s residence down Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07.

She died on the 15th of July while receiving treatment at the Intensive care unit of the Colombo National Hospital.

The victim was a resident of Diyagama West in Agarapathana and has been brought by a broker to MP Bathiudeen’s residence in October 2020.
