The Ministry of Health says a definitive statement cannot be made if the Omicron virus variant is prevalent in Sri Lanka.
Speaking during a media briefing today Media Spokesman of the Ministry, Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said gene sequencing is taking place continuously adding that until one such test indicates the variant, a statement cannot be made that Omicron is prevalent in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Herath said samples of overseas arrivals who test positive, undergo gene sequencing, adding it will continue in order to determine if any one of them are carrying the Omicron variant.
Dr. Herath added individuals must protect themselves by ensuring they are vaccinated and must also ensure they follow strict health practices.
On a separate note, Dr. Hemantha Herath said a Sunday newspaper quoted him indicating that a lockdown could be enforced.
However, he clarified that a lockdown will not be enforced adding that there is a possibility of cases increasing and urged the public to not be surprised if such a situation arises.
