Minister Gamini Lokuge says the Cabinet of Ministers reached a unanimous decision that wages of teachers and principals cannot be increased at present.
Speaking to media after yesterday’s Cabinet of Ministers meeting, the Minister said Rs.56 billion is required in order to meet teachers’ salary demands.
Minister Lokuge said this issue was caused owing to the former government, adding that the next Budget will address concerns of teachers.
He noted the matter was discussed at length yesterday, claiming that trade union leaders will be informed of the outcomes of the talks.
The Minister noted that it is impossible for the government to spend Rs.56 million at present given the economic condition in the country.
He also stated that trade unions have a democratic right to hold protests, adding the government will not obstruct this right.
