The University Grants Commission claims a specific date cannot be announced for the local university system to function as per usual.
The UGC attributed the decision to a majority of university students residing at dormitories, posing a significant risk of the coronavirus spreading.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Chairman of the UGC Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said universities will continue to function at its current 50 percent capacity.
7,500 students are currently enrolled at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura alone.
Senior Prof. Amaratunge said it is impractical to resume universities at full capacity under such circumstances.
