Minister of Education Prof. GL Peiris believes a solution can be reached at today’s Cabinet of Ministers meeting pertaining to teacher principal salary anomalies.
Speaking at a media briefing today, the Minister said all aspects will be considered.
Minister Peiris said the government will do its utmost to address their grievances.
He stated the matter related to the strike action by teacher principal trade unions was discussed at last week’s Cabinet meeting, adding that a decision was reached to take time in addressing the matter after considering all related matters in detail.
The Minister said the Prime Minister and seven Ministers sat with trade union representatives last Tuesday and discussed their grievances at length.
The Education Minister claimed teacher principal salary concerns should be addressed taking into consideration the country’s economic status.
He said the delay in addressing teacher principal demands is not due to a lack of interest on the part of the government.
He noted the country’s situation must be considered prior to reaching any decision.
The Minister also raised concerns over the state of the economy battered by the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted that the government’s income avenues have been affected.
He added all matters will be considered while a practical solution will be provided to teacher principal concerns.
The Education Minister expressed his disappointment that children are the most affected by the ongoing strike action.
