The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the resolution submitted by the Minister of Health for the implementation of a national policy on transplantation of organs, cells and tissues.
Transplantation of organs, cells and tissues is considered as a successful methodology to secure lives of patients at the final stages of dysfunction of internal organs including kidneys, liver, heart, lungs and pancreas.
According to the Cabinet paper tabled by the Health Minister, transplant surgeries are being carried out at nine state hospitals including two major national centres in Colombo and Kandy.
The Health Minister has said the requirement of a national policy on organ transplant has been recognized for improving the living standards and securing rights of donors and their families as well as the recipients of organs.
Accordingly, the national policy has been complied in accordance with the conventions of the World Health Summit and the guidelines of the World Health Organization on human organ transplant.
