The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to enact legal provisions for the recognition of divorces, annulments and judicial separations in foreign countries.
The proposal was made by the Minister of Justice to instruct a legal draftsman to prepare a new bill.
The Cabinet paper states Sri Lanka does not accept court decisions obtained by Sri Lankans who were married in Sri Lanka and subsequently filed divorce or marital cases overseas.
Due to current legal provisions, such persons are required to file a divorce case in Sri Lanka again.
The Family Law Advisory Committee has appointed by the Minister of Justice has recommended that legal provisions be made to accept divorce, annulment and judicial separation to take place abroad.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has granted approval to the proposal.
