COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Consumer Affairs Authority has threatened to take legal action against vendors who sell eggs above the maximum retail price declared by the government.
The CAA on the 20th of January issued a Gazette Notification declaring maximum retail prices for eggs.
According to the Gazette, a white egg must be sold at a maximum price of Rs.44 while a brown egg must be sold at Rs.46.
Meanwhile, the CAA conducted several rounds of raids during the weekend.
CAA Chairman Shantha Niriella said any retail shop owner found guilty of selling eggs above retail price will be liable for a fine of between Rs.100,000 and Rs.500,000 while larger entities such as supermarket chains can be punished with a fine of between Rs.1 million and Rs.5 million.
The announcement comes after complaints were lodged with the CAA in the past couple of days of vendors selling eggs above MRP declared by the government.
