Secretary of Defence Gen. (Rtd.) Kamal Gunaratne says the hand grenade found at the All Saints’ Church in Borella is not a threat to national security.
Speaking to media in Kandy today he revealed that investigations would take time.
The Defence Secretary said the Police and intelligence units require a several days to make substantial progress in investigations to identify the suspect who placed the explosive at the church.
He assured due security will be provided to churches and other places of worship, while those guilty of such offences will be arrested.
Kamal Gunaratne revealed that the probe has progressed satisfactorily, despite information pertaining to investigations not being released to the public.
In response to allegations levelled by Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith over the Easter Sunday attacks, the Defence Secretary said Police have taken long term measures to investigate the incident, which will lead to the final result.
The Defence Secretary said if the Cardinal is displeased with the final result, he can criticise the forces as he pleased.
He reiterated that officers must be able to gather enough evidence against the perpetrators to present their case before the law and ensure wrongdoers are punished.
The Defence Secretary said they will tackle attempts by certain groups to sabotage the government’s progress.
