Health authorities have urged the public to refrain from experimenting with various drugs advertised on social media claiming they provide protection from the coronavirus.

Speaking during a media briefing yesterday at the Health Promotion Bureau, Specialist at the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Upul Dissanayake said no other drug other than paracetamol has been prescribed for COVID-patients thus far.

Dr. Dissanayake said it is dangerous to experiment with various activities circulating on social media to identify if a person has contracted the coronavirus, adding bed rest is important.

He said there is a possibility of various drugs being approved in future.

Dr. Dissanayake said liquids are paramount in preventing dehydration adding 2,500ml must be consumed daily. He said liquids other than alcohol are recommended.

Meanwhile, joining the media briefing, Director of the Bureau Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa said the 1390 hotline introduced for COVID-patients at home is only valid if they have been registered with Public Health Inspectors.

Dr. Batuwanthudawa said a COVID-positive patient can only connect via 1390 only if registered with the system by the area Medical Officer of Health or the PHI.

He said they are mainly focused on treating patients while at home.
