The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has once again called on the government, including the Police and armed forces to act with utmost restraint.
President of the Bar Association PC Saliya Peiris issuing a statement today said there is an escalation in the vicinity of Parliament where protesters have gathered.
He said the BASL was informed that there is a heavy presence of Police and service personnel in the vicinity and also reports of persons attending the protest being subject to arrest and detention.
The BASL once again called on all concerned including the government, the Inspector General of Police and all Police officers and the armed forces to act with utmost restraint.
The Bar Association said those engaging in lawful exercise of their right to protest cannot be arrested.
The BASL reiterated that the right of the public to protest in a peaceful manner must be respected and upheld and also stressed that such protests must be peaceful at all times.
