Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has informed Foreign Minister GL Peiris and the Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow to ensure the safety of Sri Lankan students in Belarus, amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The parent’s collective of around 1,500 students studying at the Belarusian State University and other higher education institutions tabled a request to the Premier, seeking the safety of the Lankan students.
Accordingly, the Sri Lankan mission nearest to Belarus, the Moscow Embassy, will look into the wellbeing of the more than 1,500 students and Sri Lankans currently in Belarus.
The Prime Minister also issued directives to the Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow to contact universities in a bid to delay academics of students by two weeks, to facilitate their return to Sri Lanka, by obtaining visas to travel to Russia.
