(NewsRadio); Sri Lanka had to settle for the silver medal in the of the Asian Games Women’s Cricket Competition after a 19-run defeat at the hands of favourites India in Hangzhou today.
Chasing a modest target of 118, Sri Lanka managed only 97/8 in their allotted to 20 overs.
Hasini Perera scored an impressive 25 while Nilakshi de Silva hit 23 but the rest of the batters were unable to help Sri Lanka cross the line and claim a historic gold medal.
For India, Titas Sadhu had 3/6 while Rajeshwari Gayakwad finished with 2/20.
Earlier, Sri Lankan bowlers restricted India for 116/7 in 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana top scored for India with 46 while Jemimah Rodrigues hit 42.
Udeshika Prabodhani, Inoka Ranaweera and Sugandika Kumari picked up two wickets apiece to give an early advantage for Sri Lanka but the batters failed to consolidate the momentum.
This is incidentally the first medal for Sri Lanka at this year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
