Former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Sports Council.
The appointment was made at a function held at the Torrington National Sports Council.
The position of Chairman of the National Sports Council was awarded by Minister of Sports Roshan Ranasinghe.
The Council includes 15-members.
Former cricket captain Mahela Jayawardena led the National Sports Council during the tenure of Namal Rajapksa as the Minister of Sports.
Several high-profile cricketers including Kumar Sangakkara, Aravinda de Silva, and Muttiah Muralitharan and athletes were part of the National Sports Council previously.
The main task of the council is to advise the Sport Minister on matters leading to the development of sports in the country.
The National Sports Council which is a national body is appointed under the Sports Law of 1973 (Section 25 Clause 4).
