COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Court of Appeal today ordered Parliamentarian Sanath Nishantha to appear before Court on the 13th of October.
MP Nishantha has been summoned over petitions filed on charges of contempt of court.
Summons was issued by the Appeals Court bench consisting of Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and R Gurusinghe after considering the petitions filed by Attorneys Vijith Kumar and Priyalal Sirisena.
The Appeals Court bench also ordered the Attorney General to draft contempt of court charges against MP Sanath Nishantha in connection with the petitions filed against him by two attorneys.
The petitions were filed earlier this month and MP Nishantha, the Sri Lanka Bar Association, and the Attorney General were cited as respondents.
The petitioners called for an investigation into a statement by MP Nishantha that they claim was in contempt of court, during a media briefing held recently.
The petitioners claimed that MP Nishantha at a media briefing on the 23rd of August at the SLPP headquarters had made a statement that defamed the judicial system.
Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama appeared for the Attorney General during today’s hearing while President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris and Attorney Manjula Balasooriya appeared on behalf of the petitioners.
