The opposition reiterates that the sentence handed to former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake is disproportionate to the Contempt of Court charge he was found guilty of.
Speaking to media in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said no country has issued such a stern sentence to a person who is found guilty of Contempt of Court charges.
MP Kiriella said therefore Ranjan Ramanayake should receive a lenient sentence.
He said he has expressed this sentiment inside and outside of Parliament.
MP Lakshman Kiriella said persons can criticise and challenge court verdicts although some have created a myth that it cannot be done in Sri Lanka.
MP Kiriella noted however no persons should hurl allegations at judges and said they have only commented on the severity of the sentence imposed on former MP Ranjan Ramanayake.
