COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Another consignment of one million eggs from India is scheduled to arrive in the country today.
Following the decision by the Cabinet of Ministers, the State Trading Corporation has imported more than five million eggs so far.
The STC said it continues to direct samples from imported eggs to the Department Animal Production and Health to obtain clearance before being released to hoteliers and bakery owners.
A senior spokesperson of the STC noted that they will continue to import eggs with the approval of the Cabinet until adequate eggs are available in the market.
Meanwhile, Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando assures that the prices of eggs will reduce in the next two weeks.
Speaking to media, Minister Fernando noted that they were compelled to import eggs from India, since the producers were not releasing the required amount of eggs to the market.
He said the move faced a number of challenges but stressed that until there is no shortage, they will take measures to import eggs.
The Trade Minister added that considering the prevailing climate, the prices of eggs will reduce within the next two weeks.
