Election monitoring organizations accuse the government of preparing to postpone the local authorities’ elections once again by presenting various amendments.
Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Rohana Hettiarachchi has said they are preparing to take legal action over the move to postpone elections.
Meanwhile, the National Election Commission said it is not in favour of postponing elections including local authorities’ elections.
Chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa noted that the Election Commission is of the opinion that the postponement of the elections will cause serious damage to the sovereignty of the people.
He said after the 20th, the Election Commission will have the power to conduct the local authorities’ elections.
