COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The annual Sri Pada Pilgrimage season begins today.

The casket of relics and the statue of God Sumana Saman were taken from the Galpottawala Sri Pada Rajamaha Vihara to the Sri Pada Maluwa to commence the season.

Accordingly, the pilgrimage season runs from today to next year’s Vesak Poya day.

The Ministry of Buddhasasana said all traditional customs and rituals connected to the annual Sri Pada Pilgrimage season will be performed under the guidance of Sri Padasthanadipathi, Sabaragamuwa Chief Sanghanayaka and Chancellor of the Uva Wellassa University Venerable Bengamuwe Sri Dhammadinna Thera.

During the past three years, several restrictions were imposed considering the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Health guidelines were strictly adhered to to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Railways said special trains will be deployed to transport pilgrims during the Sri Pada Pilgrimage season.
