The Ministry of Health says all vaccines that are in use in Sri Lanka at present are effective against the Delta coronavirus strain.
Speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo today, Director of the Epidemiology Unit Dr. Samitha Ginige said since it is an evolving situation, the public should adhere to guidelines issued periodically by health authorities.
Dr. Samitha Ginige noted that the Delta variant is spreading rapidly in several countries and said vaccination remains one of the key elements to reduce the infection rates.
He encouraged those above the age of 60 years and people with health complications to obtain the vaccines promptly.
Director of the Epidemiology Unit Dr. Samitha Ginige also noted that 77 percent among the 4,105 COVID-19 related deaths that have been reported in Sri Lanka were persons over the age of 60.
Only 22 percent were between 30 and 59 years of age.
Dr. Ginige said therefore those in high risk groups must obtain any available vaccine without unnecessary delays.
