State Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama says meters will be installed in all three-wheelers within a period of three months from the 1st of January 2022.
Speaking to media in Kandy today, the State Minister said the relevant Gazette Notification in this regard has been signed and will be issued in the future.
The State Minister said laws have been formulated to arrest three-wheeler drivers that operate without meters in the future.
He said the programme to install meters will commence from the Western Province.
The State Minister said through the 2022 Budget funds have been allocated for the three-wheeler industry while a Regulatory Authority for three-wheelers will also be established, adding that all such measures are being taken for the wellbeing of three-wheeler operators and the public.
Meanwhile, the State Minister assured that there is no fuel shortage in the country.
He added people topped up tanks during the past week, adding that even under such circumstances there was no fuel shortage claiming Sri Lanka has a surplus of fuel.
State Minister Dilum Amunugama however admitted to a shortage of gas in the country.
The State Minister said two companies met the country’s gas requirement in the past, with one company currently facing economic difficulties.
He said gas is supplied by two private companies and vowed to provide a solution to the gas shortage.
