National Organizer of the All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation Namal Karunaratne says the country’s agriculture sector is collapsing daily due to unplanned and arbitrary decisions of the government.
Speaking to media this morning, Karunaratne said paddy fields across the country are being deserted as farmers are disheartened due to the fertiliser crisis.
He said the Maha season has arrived, adding however farmers are not prepared. Karunaratne said the farming community has entered a major protest campaign.
He said the next Gazette notification to be reversed by the government is the Gazette pertaining to fertiliser.
Karunaratne warned that the damage caused by the reversal of the Gazette notification will be catastrophic.
Furthermore, Karunaratne claimed the present administration is responsible for the worst damage caused to the country’s agriculture sector and food production.
He said the area of farming lands has decreased, reducing the produce which will have dire consequences.
Karunaratne attributed the government’s arbitrary decisions as the root cause and urged the government to consider its decision prior to implementation.
