Chairman of the Select Committee of Parliament to Identify Appropriate Reforms of the Election Laws and the Electoral System, Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena says it is the Attorney Generals opinion that Provincial Council Elections cannot be held under the old electoral system, without approving new laws in Parliament.
Minister Gunawardena said certain laws are prohibiting the conduct of a Provincial Council Election despite such state bodies functioning without the election of public representatives.
The facts were disclosed at a meeting of the Select Committee, in Parliament yesterday.
The Attorney General has informed the Parliamentary Select Committee that Provincial Council Elections cannot be worked off without passing new laws, despite the current law being abolished.
