Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has instructed officials to promptly compile the new proposed National Security Bill, that is due to be tabled instead of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, for the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The Ministry said the PTA that is currently enforced must be updated to suit the present need, adding that the government has taken steps to prepare the National Security Bill after considering the views of the local and international community that prioritises the people’s rights and democracy.
Secretary of the Ministry Wasantha Perera Additional Solicitor General President’s Counsel Nerin Pulle, Additional Secretary (Law) of the Justice Ministry Piumanthi Peiris, Deputy Inspector General of Police Asanga Karavita, Additional Draftsman of the Legal Draftsman’s Department DD Kulasena and a group of senior officials representing the Justice Ministry were part of a discussion today (9).
The new bill is being drafted by an expert committee Co-chaired by Additional Solicitor General President’s Counsel Nerin Pulle and President’s Counsel Nalinda Indratissa.
