COLOMBO (NewsRadio); 83 individuals who were arrested yesterday for engaging in unruly behaviour during a protest organised by the Socialist Youth Union are scheduled to be produced before court today.

Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Attorney Nihal Thalduwa said statements were recorded from the group last evening.

Investigations over the incident will be conducted under the direct supervision of the DIG-Colombo.

The protest march organised under the theme “අරගලයට නව ජවයක් – තරුණ බලය යළි කොළඹට”got underway at Town Hall and was due to reach Colombo, Fort last evening.

However, Police fired water cannons and tear gas opposite the Ministry of Health to disperse the protesters when they were reaching Maradana from Deans Road.

Seven protesters who sustained injuries during the protest were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Police said two Buddhist monks, 77 males, and four female protesters were arrested for engaging in unruly behaviour.

It is reported that the National Organiser of the Socialist Youth Union Eranga Gunasekera is also among the group of arrested individuals.
