The 48th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council is scheduled to begin in Geneva, Switzerland today.
The 48th UN Human Rights Council session will begin at 2pm Sri Lanka time today and will be worked-off until the 8th of October.
During today’s session, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet will present an oral update on the progress made by Sri Lanka based on the UNHRC resolution 46/1.
In its resolution 46/1, the Human Rights Council requested the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to enhance its monitoring and reporting on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka, including on progress in reconciliation and accountability, and to present an oral update to the Council at its 48th session.
Accordingly, the Human Rights Commissioner will deliver her oral update this evening. The general debate on the oral update of the UN Human Rights Commissioner will begin tomorrow.
During the debate, representatives of member nations and civil rights groups such as Human Rights Watch will make their determinations.
The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva will represent the government.
Meanwhile, today, the High Commissioner for Human Rights will also present reports and oral updates on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, the Tigray region of Ethiopia, Myanmar, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Yemen in addition to Sri Lanka.
