Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian K. P. S. Kumarasiri says almost 47,000 complaints have been lodged over women and child abuses from 2015 to 2019.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday the Parliamentarian noted 5,391 complaints were lodged in 2016 alone, which included 2,197 serious crimes and 1,488 sexual assault and torture cases.
Also joining the debate, Samagi Jana Balawegaya Mujibur Rahuman said it was evident that Sri Lanka was reporting an increase in offences relating to abuse of women and children in recent days.
He revealed the number of complaints relating to the abuse of women and children increased from 3,892 in 2010 up to the more than 9,000 in 2016 and continued throughout until 2020.
He also stressed that 4,740 complaints were reported during the first six months of this year.
