457 persons have been killed in 434 fatal motor accidents reported in the country this year.
Police said 177 motorbikes, 65 lorries, 58 three-wheelers and 28 vans were involved in the 434 fatal accidents reported thus far this year.
Speaking to media, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said 148 persons riding on motorbikes, 146 pedestrians and 56 passengers of vehicles were killed in the accidents.
The Police Media Spokesman added 861 accidents resulted in serious injuries to persons during this period.
He noted a majority of casualties due to road accidents this year are those riding on motorbikes, while passengers and pedestrians who do not contribute to driving are also killed in motor accidents.
Meanwhile, 44 persons have died in 43 fatal road accidents across the island between the 19th and the 25th of February.
Police said additionally during the last week 120 motor accidents resulted in serious injuries to persons while 173 accidents resulted in minor injuries.
24 out of the 44 persons who succumbed in fatal accidents were pedestrians, passengers and pillion riders.
Meanwhile five hit and run incidents were also reported during the period.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said Police teams have commenced investigations to arrest the suspects.
