Minister of Trade and Food Security Nalin Fernando says the Ministry has made great efforts to prevent the country from lunging into a rice shortage.
Speaking in Parliament today during the debate on the 2022 interim budget, Minister Fernando said in order to prevent food shortages due to the economic crisis, the Trade Ministry made great efforts to prevent the country from facing a rice shortage, controlled the price of rice, resorted to steps to import rice, and other essential food items.
Minister Fernando added a significant drop has been witnessed in the market price of these food items.
The Trade Minister said amidst an economic crisis, significant intervention is needed in controlling prices of items, adding that an Extraordinary Gazette Notification was issued imposing a control price on 48 types of goods.
Minister Fernando said food inflation has reached high levels and in order to deal with it, the country’s production must be increased through the livestock, agriculture, and fisheries sectors.
He added he is carrying out a programme in this regard with the advice of the President.
