Another four million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine will reach Sri Lanka from China in the first week of August.
The Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing issuing a statement said Sri Lanka will procure the vaccine doses on a commercial basis.
The statement said this is the largest quantity of vaccines that Sri Lanka has procured in one consignment.
The Embassy is currently making arrangements to airfreight the consignment between the 4th and 8th of August.
The Chinese Embassy statement said to date, with the four million vaccine doses due to arrive in August, Sri Lanka has procured 12 million doses of COVID-19 Sinopharm vaccines.
The government of China has meanwhile gifted 2.7 million doses to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to China Dr. Palitha Kohona expressed confidence that Sri Lanka will be able to complete the vaccination programme promptly.
He extended his gratitude to the Chinese government for supporting Sri Lanka in the fight against COVID-19.
The Ambassador further said Sri Lanka is open for tourists subject to health restrictions and expects more Chinese tourists to visit Sri Lanka in future.
