COLOMBO (NewsRadio); A 30-year-old woman from Gampaha has been arrested while attempting to smuggle Rs.110 million worth of gold jewelry into the country.
Sri Lanka Customs said the woman was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning when she attempted to smuggle a stock of gold into the country.
The arrest was made following information received by the customs intelligence officers attached to the Customs Revenue Monitoring Division with the support of Indian Revenue Intelligence wing.
The woman arrived at the BIA at 1.45am from Chennai. She has commenced her journey from Dubai.
Customs said, officers retrieved 24 carat gold rings and bangles, 27 gold bars and eight capsules containing liquid gold from her luggage.
The stock of gold jewelry has been found silver-plated and while some smuggled gold had been made to look like bank cards to evade officials.
Sri Lanka customs said the seized gold weighed 4.892kg with a market value of Rs.110 million.
The eight capsules contained 2.22g of gold powder.
Further investigations are being conducted by Sri Lanka Customs.
