Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara says the power supply to 30 percent of households will be disconnected with the proposed amendments to electricity tariffs.
The MP speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today said consumers who use electricity sparingly will face a 100 percent increase adding that the price per unit is set to increase from Rs.2.50 to Rs.6, doubling electricity tariffs.
The MP said consumers will be unable to pay tariffs leading to disconnections.
MP Nanayakkara said people’s incomes will not be able to cover costs as a majority of Sri Lankans are low and middle income earners.
The MP questioned how individuals who are unable to purchase food can pay electricity bills when prices double.
