The government has yesterday confiscated 29,900 metric tonnes of sugar that were concealed in various storages in the country.
Commissioner General for Essential Services Coordination Major General MDSP Niwunhella said the seized stocks will be sold at reduced rates through government and private outlets.
The import levy on Sugar was reduced from Rs.50 to 25 cents per kilogram on the 14th of October last year. 88,878 metric tonnes of sugar was in the country on that day.
The Consumer Affairs Authority said 584,000 metric tonnes of sugar has been imported since then, till the 30th of June, this year.
The monthly demand for sugar in the country is considered to be around 35,000 tonnes.
According to data from the Consumer Affairs Authority it was revealed that sugar stocks exceeding the annual demand have been imported.
Meanwhile a Maximum Retail Price is due to be imposed today for sugar and rice.
