COLOMBO (NewsRadio); A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for deliberately running over two puppies in Mathurata.
The Police Media Division said an investigation was launched based on a complaint received by the Mathurata Police on the 18th of February over the incident.
The video of the said incident, where a motorist is seen running over two puppies was widely circulated on social media.
Police said it commenced the investigation based on the footage obtained from a nearby house.
Police identified the owner of the car through the number plate and registration details.
Accordingly, it was revealed that the owner’s brother’s wife was at the wheel at the time of the incident.
She was reportedly returning home from Padiyapelella.
The woman and her husband had appeared before the Mathurata Police after summons were issued on the driver.
Following interrogation, Police have arrested the woman under provisions of the Animal Cruelty Act.
She was then produced before the Walapane Magistrate.
Police said the woman had pled guilty to the charge and informed the magistrate that she regretted committing the offence.
Subsequently, she was released on a surety bail amounting to Rs.100,000.
The case will be taken up once again on the 1st of June.
