The Department of Irrigation says 23 reservoirs are nearing spill levels owing to the incessant rain experienced over the island.
Irrigation Director of Water Management Engineer D Abeysiriwardene said 12 reservoirs have reached spill levels. He said reservoirs in the Kandy, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa regions are at 80 percent while reservoirs in Puttalam and Mannar are at 70 percent capacity.
Abeysiriwardene added if heavy showers continue, suitable steps will be taken to address rising water levels.
He also claimed that the Senanayake Samudraya in Ampara is at 29 percent capacity with the water levels across the island currently at 53 percent capacity owing to the inclement weather.
