The draft bill of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution has been tabled in Parliament.
The draft bill presented by Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers last week.
The bill aims to annul the 20th Amendment while re-enacting progressive clauses included in the 19th Constitutional Amendment.
Accordingly, changes to the composition of the Constitutional Council, restricting dual citizenship holders from holding public office, new methodology to appoint Cabinet Ministers, among others have been proposed through the new Constitutional Amendment.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the then Prime Minister held a number of discussions to obtain views from various political parties to introduce the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
