It was revealed in Parliament yesterday that neither a political party nor politicians were involved in the 2018 conspiracy related to a VVIP assassination plot.
Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera made this revelation in response to a question raised by Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara Jayamaha in Parliament yesterday.
MP Bandara questioned Minister Weerasekera of the sequence of events, including DIG Nalaka Silva’s efforts to arrest Zahran Hashim and several others based on evidence available in 2018, following which information of a VVIP assassination plot was revealed by an individual named Namal Kumara.
He charged that Nalaka Silva was subsequently removed from his post, leading to the 52 day coup, Mahinda Rajapaksa being elected Prime Minister, the coup being defeated, the good governance government regaining power, then President Maithripala Sirisena retaining the Ministry of Law and Order and the Easter attacks that followed subsequently.
In response Minister Weerasekera said investigations into the matter are continuing.
The Minister said investigations into DIG Nalaka Silva are being carried out by the Police Special Investigation Unit on the directives of the Inspector General of Police.
He noted the files in relation to the case were in Court, adding they have been obtained and are being processed accordingly.
